Houston’s 2nd annual stroke survivor conference Surviving Stroke: The Journey Toward Wellness will offer a myriad of educational experiences for the participants.
- Dr. James Grotta, a Professor of Neurology and Director of the Stroke Program at The University of Texas Medical School will lead off the program with an update on stroke.
- Dr. Judi Johnson, a 15-year stroke survivor and international educator and consultant, and last year’s keynote speaker, will return to share more of her strategies for living with stroke. Her presentation, Beyond Surviving to Thriving, will focus on self care and advocacy for stroke survivors.
- Dr. James Duffy, the President/CEO of the Institute of Religion and Health and the Medical Director of the Institute for Palliative Medicine at The Methodist Hospital, will conclude the day with a presentation on healing from within.
The day will also include special presentations on aphasia and pain management and a demonstration of Tai Chi, a very popular feature of last year’s conference which is back by special demand.
- Dr. Benoy Benny, Assistant Professor and Director of the Spine, Sports and Pain in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, and a specialist in pain management will discuss post-stroke pain.
- Dr. Kris Conley, a speech therapist at The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research will discuss the treatment of aphasia in stroke survivors.
- Mike Powers is a certified Massage Therapist, who has also been trained in meditation, Qigong, Tai Chi, and Reiki. He provides services to cancer patients and their caregivers, and staff through the Place... of Wellness, MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
A new feature of this year’s conference is Lunch ‘n Learn – a series of informal presentations during lunch. Participants are asked to choose one topic when they register for the conference. The Lunch ‘n Learn sessions will be informal discussions lead by experts in each field. Choices include:
- Acupuncture, Meide Liu, M.D., L.Ac., an acupuncturist at MD Anderson
- Aphasia, Kris Conley, PhD, Speech Therapist at TIRR
- Life Story, Diane Persson, PhD, Director of the LTC Ombudsman Program
- Nutrition, Andrea Storo, RD, LD
- Physical Fitness, Bod Gregersen, Stroke Survivor & Carolyn Kelley, MS, PT
- Spasticity, Jill Seale, MS, PT
The cost of the conference has been kept low to encourage participation
- $25 for stroke survivors, family members, students, and the general public
- $45 for a stroke survivor and one family member (a savings of $5.00)
- $75 for professionals. CEUs are pending for nursing, social work, physical therapy, and speech therapy.
